Таємне голосування в Раді Безпеки ООН вивело у лідери трьох кандидатів з країн ЄС в передвиборній гонці, за підсумками якої виберуть нового Генерального секретаря ООН.

Нинішній генсек ООН Пан Гі Мун піде у відставку 31 грудня, коли завершиться другий термін його повноважень.

За даними численних витоків після голосування, що відбулося 29 серпня, лідирують екс-прем'єр-міністр Португалії Антоніу Гутьєрреш, глава МЗС Словаччини Мирослав Лайчак і глава ЮНЕСКО, яка представляє Болгарію, Ірина Бокова.

Це було третє подібне голосування, в якому 15 членів Ради Безпеки голосували за три варіанта: підтримати, не підтримувати або не висловлювати думки по будь-якому з решти 10 кандидатів у гонці.

Попередні голосування пройшли 21 липня і 4 серпня, і за їх результатами з перегонів за посаду вибули кандидати від Хорватії Весна Пусіч і Чорногорії Ігор Лукшич.

Наступне голосування відбудеться 9 вересня. Слід зазначити, що постійні члени Ради Безпеки ООН (США, Росія, Китай, Велика Британія і Франція) володіють правом вето. Однак, на даному етапі голосування було анонімним і право вето ніхто не застосовував.

За традицією ООН, світ поділений на регіональні групи. Східноєвропейська група, в яку входять країни колишнього СРСР, всі нові члени ЄС з Центральної та Східної Європи і країни-кандидати в ЄС, крім Туреччини, єдина ніколи не мала генсека ООН.
